Immersive Visualization takes advantage of the fact that when we imagine sensory experiences our brain activates as if it is actually feeling that sensation. This happens when you dream. It also can happen when you imagine what a strawberry tastes like and feels like in your mouth. Your brain activates in a way that makes you feel like you can actually taste it. This is also true when imagining feeling your body without any painful signals. This skill can be particularly useful when the pain has become overwhelming, possibly creating a feeling of claustrophobia within your own body. Using immersive visualization can give you a break from the painful sensations, overriding the system with sensations of your imagination.
