Whether you are using this skill for stress management or pain management the process is similar, but there are important differences.
In both stress management and pain mastery, you will tense and release muscles in a sequence. In both, you will focus on the sensations of tension, the sensation of letting go, and the sensations of relaxation.
In stress management you want to focus on vigorous tension and sudden and quick letting go of tension.
For pain mastery you will be focusing on building control over muscle tension, building a brain to body pathway for muscle activation and deactivation. Thus, you do not need to tense the muscle as vigorously.
