Natural (Endogenous) Opioids
The #1 biological system that enhances our sense of being able to actually find moments of reprieve from the pain is the internal (endogenous) opioid system that occurs naturally in our body. It is important to know that this physical system is not the only way to find reprieve, but this domain tends to have some the most immediate effects.
Notice that we always use the term opioid and not "narcotic"... there is a reason for this. Narcotic is a legal term that affects how people are punished for distribution or how the substances are controlled. Use of the term Narcotic perpetuates the stigma of these substances as something that only criminals use. Thus, we strictly adhere to the word "opioid" because it is the scientific term for the naturally occurring substance within our body that block the pain signals.
