Why are motor nerves in the reprieve skills category? Muscles are controlled from the brain through motor nerves and frankly muscles are often a source of pain for almost any primary pain condition... Why would we make such a claim? Watch the video and find out.
Remember back to the lesson on the Biological Basis of Pain. In that lesson we learned that there are 3 causes of pain: mechanical, inflammatory, and temperature. Muscles can activate two of the three types of pain signals.
- Muscles can be a source of mechanical pain through squeezing nerves. I have seen many individuals with sciatic pain who were told it was their low back discover that the muscles inside the pelvis were the culprits! So muscles can cause pain through both mechanical mechanisms.
- Muscles can also be a source of inflammatory pain. By squeezing off their own blood supply system they cannot receive new healthy body chemicals (like oxygen), instead, build up cell waste.
Because of the different pain types caused by muscles and the different reasons muscles get stuck it is important to have different strategies to relieving the pain associated with muscles - we do this through the motor nerves!
